Roman Leykam | Frank Mark     »Live Extracts 96-98«
Release: Feb 2011 · 10 Tracks · TOTAL: 57:50 Minuten

At this album Roman Leykam and Frank Mark present live recordings from the years 1996 (performance at Monteith Barracks/Fuerth/Germany) and 1998 (German Tour 98). Calm instrumental ambient soundscapes, partly with voice- and drum-samples. Leykam's e-guitar and guitar controlled synthesizers create headstrong soundscapes with Mark's electronics in the background.

Reviews:

... There are many nice episodes along this collection, especially those ones where the cosmic and progressive rock vein by Roman Leykam pulsates more intensely by highlighting the mystical pressure of the polished and clean sandpapering on frequencies and the thinning of sounds coming from samples and tapes by Frank Mark ... [more] / (Vito Camarretta für www.chaindlk.com/Feb 2011)

... the tracks between two and eight minutes sometimes reminiscent of instrumental experiments of David Sylvian from the eighties and nineties, his experiments with Can musician Holger Czukay and also of some works from Czukay himself ... [more] / (Wolfgang Kabsch für www.musikansich.de/Feb 2011)

... really this music opens the mind for inner worlds. Since a guitar leads the most tracks, also rock fans who like guitar sounds of the weird kind might be interested ... [mehr] / (WS für Eclipsed Rock Magazin/Feb 2011)

... concerning the feeling it all reminds me of Steve Roach but without all the darkness. A lot of hall effects, much "progressive" moves; guitars which sound like synths and reverse. If there would be a genre "Adult Oriented Experimentation", this would hit the mark. Leykam and Mark allow sounds, they do not force them, as a result it sometimes sounds banal. The beautiness of this music results from the attitude "as you we go along". Maximum score, in whatever category ... / (Zipo in Auf Abwegen/Feb 2011)

... most of the album has a meditative character which exudes calmness at all the tracks. Partly the music of Leykam/Mark occurs vanguard and experimental, but the most is pleasing and relaxing ... / (Marleen Karthaus in Musikmagazin Dark Spy No.41/Mai-Juni 2011)

... listeners who want to drift in a soundscape unbiased and get away from thoughts are dead right here ... / Kulturmagazin Expuls/April-Mai 2011)

... really these scapes are ideal for meditation, dream journeys and even for hypnosis ... These sounds are imaginable for room installations in water works, underground walks or large sacral buildings. Some of the synthetic sounds and solo guitar loops sound out-of-date and remind strongly of the new age repertoire of the late eighties and nineties. However it doesn't derogate the charming character of the album ... / Magazin LEGACY No.71/Feb 2011)

... the electronic-soundscapers Roman Leykam & Frank Mark charaterise this album as "ambient, improvised, meditative". These older live recordings are mostly free of beats, partly very abstract chill out tracks ... / ju in Musiker-Fachmagazin Gitarre&Bass /Apr 2011)

These live recordings from 1996-98 are a rarity of the ambient/improvisation artists Roman Leykam (guitar, loops) and Frank Mark (keys, samples). Usually both artists avoid the stage and prefer to create their daedal, meditative and improvisational sound sculptures in the studio, where they can experiment without time pressure. The most of the CD contains recordings from the 'German Tour 98'. Here both artists ventured the spontaneous challenge, the creation of electronic influenced tracks combined with the strange guitar sound (loops, synths, treatments) of Leykam. Some stage versions last more than eight minutes and remind me sometimes of "Can". I recommend to listen to "Blurred Pathways" recorded at "Feierwerk" in Munich. / Rainer Guérich in Musikmagazin inMusic /März-April 2011)
